______________________________________________________________________________ Mail: Qualcomm's policy on providing support for freeware Eudora Q. I'm having a problem with the version of Eudora I got with The Internet Starter Kit (or that I copied off an FTP site). How can I get help in solving my problem? A. Steve Dorner, the guy who wrote Eudora for the Mac, made a condition of his hiring by Qualcomm Enterprise Software Technologies (QUEST) that they always provide freeware versions of Eudora for the Mac and the PC. To its credit, Qualcomm's continued to do just that, and what's more, the freeware version is amazingy functional -- it's not a crippled, limited version. But as the bulletin from QUEST below explains, Qualcomm's not able to provide free support for the freeware version any longer. That means that sending mail to eudora-support@qualcomm.com or calling 1-800-2EUDORA will result in...nothing. The excellent commercial versions sell for about $80 including diskettes, documentation, and support, and include upgrades -- we use them through- out our office and personally, and recommend them highly. You can use the 1-800 number above or eudora-sales@qualcomm.com to get information on prices, licenses, and features. We at Northwest Nexus have a FAQ that tells how to configure Eudora for use on our system; point your web browser at: http://webfaq.halcyon.com/ ...to read a copy. Here's the bulletin from QUEST: Date: Mon, 10 Apr 1995 09:09:24 -0700 To: (Quest_News Subscribers) From: eudora_c@qualcomm.com (Eudora by QUALCOMM) Subject: EUDORA FREEWARE SUPPORT POLICY CHANGES Dear quest_news subscriber, QUALCOMM Enterprise Software Technologies (QUEST) welcomes you to our mailing list. As a member of this list, you will receive notification of new software releases for both the Eudora freeware and Eudora by QUALCOMM, copies of all QUEST press releases, new product announcements, news about upcoming trade shows, and other important information. We hope you find the following items both interesting and informative. EUDORA FREEWARE SUPPORT POLICY CHANGES -- MAILING LIST SUPPORT OPTION ADDED QUALCOMM is firmly committed to providing quality software and support to the freeware community. However, due to the enormous growth in the number of freeware and commercial users, we are no longer able to provide direct support to Eudora freeware users. Therefore, we have discontinued answering freeware e-mail and servicing the eudora-hotline freeware support address. We will continue to indirectly support both the Macintosh and Windows versions of the Eudora freeware by providing documentation, README files, and maintenance releases on our ftp site (ftp.qualcomm.com). We also encourage you to keep sending us your bug reports and suggestions (see BUGS AND SUGGESTIONS below). Additionally, we're doing a couple of other things to help freeware users find answers to their Eudora questions. MAC-EUDORA-FORUM AND WINDOWS-EUDORA-FORUM MAILING LISTS Two mailing lists have been established to allow Eudora freeware users to communicate with one another, answer questions, and exchange ideas about the Eudora freeware. The lists are called mac-eudora-forum and windows-eudora-forum. To subscribe to the mac-eudora-forum list, send a message to majordomo@qualcomm.com with the body text as follows: subscribe mac-eudora-forum To subscribe to the windows-eudora-forum list, send a message to majordomo@qualcomm.com with the body text as follows: subscribe windows-eudora-forum NOTE: Make sure that your return address is your correct mailing address - this is the address that will be added to the mailing list. Once you are subscribed, you can send a message to all other subscribers on your particular list by addressing it to either mac-eudora-forum@qualcomm.com or windows-eudora-forum@qualcomm.com. You can also address your message to both lists if your question is not platform-specific. Participation in these lists is purely voluntary. Since these are "unmoderated" mailing lists, any message sent to a list is automatically sent to all subscribers on the list. This means you could receive a large volume of e-mail from the other subscribers. To remove yourself from either list, send the appropriate unsubscribe message to majordomo@qualcomm.com with the body text as follows: unsubscribe mac-eudora-forum or unsubscribe windows-eudora-forum NEWS GROUPS Currently, the Macintosh version of Eudora is discussed on the comp.sys.mac.comm news group and the Windows version of Eudora is discussed on the alt.winsock and comp.os.msdos.mail-news news groups. In addition, freeware users are currently attempting to establish a news group devoted exclusively to the freeware version of Eudora. Look for updates on the status of this group on the eudora_forum mailing list. BUGS AND SUGGESTIONS If you discover a possible bug in the Eudora software or have a suggestion for improvement, send your bug report to eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com or your suggestion to eudora-suggest@qualcomm.com. COMMERCIAL USERS If you are a commercial Eudora by QUALCOMM user and you've been using the eudora-hotline freeware support address, contact your e-mail administrator for support. If you are a site e-mail administrator or an individual user, consult your product package for the Eudora Technical Support toll-free telephone number and e-mail address designated for commercial customers. MORE INFORMATION For additional information about Eudora and Eudora by QUALCOMM, send a message to eudora-info@qualcomm.com (no message text necessary). If you would like more specific information on licensing the commercial version of Eudora, send a message to eudora-sales@qualcomm.com (no message text necessary). Both of these addresses will provide you with an automated response message. If you would like to speak directly with a Sales Representative, call (800) 2-Eudora or (619) 658-1291. Thank you for your support of Eudora and Eudora by QUALCOMM. (29-Mar-96/maiqpops/MJT) ___________________________________________________________________________ Copyright 1996 Northwest Nexus Inc.
