___________________________________________________________________________ Mail: Why have I been removed from the listserv I was on? Q. The mailing lists I'm on dropped me from the list. They say that mail to my address bounced, so they took me off. Why did this happen? A. halcyon and nwnexus, the two machines that receive and route all the mail that comes here, rarely go down, except for scheduled maintenance (and even that happens rarely). When they do, however, mail can't be delivered. Most mailers just wait and try to send the message to you again, giving up only when a reasonable period of time has elapsed, always more than one day. Some listserver managers automatically remove you from a mailing list if mail fails to go through in only one day; that's not reasonable. Three days is a more typical waiting period for giving up on sending mail, but some list managers don't want to deal with that many bounced messages. Some list managers will tell you that *we're* being irresponsible because our mail server isn't available every second -- but that's not the way the Internet, and Internet mail delivery, was designed and is structured. Any list that gives you only one bounce and drops you isn't managed very well. Resubscribe to the list and all will be well.
