News:  Changing your news server name in popular newsreaders


Q.  I'm not sure how to set up my newsreader to access the news server.  I've
    set things up as described in "Internet Starter Kit" for Macintosh, and
    I'm using the latest version of NewsWatcher.  Do I need to change the
    domain name and IP address in MacTCP?  

A.  No; those settings have nothing to do with news service.  The settings
    that were provided in the book will work; if we've given you some other
    setup on the phone or in mail, you can use that.  Leave that all as it is.

    To change the news server address in NewsWatcher (thanks to Bill Squires):

    1) From the "File Menu", select "Preferences...". A "General Options"
       drop-down menu should be presented.

    2) From the "General Options" drop-down menu, select "Server Addresses".
       A "Server Addresses" dialog box should be presented.

    3) In the "Server Addresses" dialog box should be two text-entry boxes,
       one of which is labeled "News Server:"  Enter "news.nwnexus.com"
       (without the quotation marks, of course) in that box. (*Don't* be
       hasty and enter it in the "Mail Server:" box.  It won't work.  In the
      "Mail Server" box, you should enter "smtp.nwnexus.com").

    Note:  If you are using Internet Config, things get a bit more
    complicated (on first appearance, at least; in the long run, things get
    much simpler!)  Refer to the Internet Config documentation for info
    on how to set it up, and use the same addresses given above.


Q.  I'm using WinVN, and I can't figure out how to change the news server
    name.  What do I have to do?

A.  To change the news server address in WinVN:

    1) Edit the winvn.ini file and edit the NNTPHost entry:

         NNTPHost=news.nwnexus.com


Q.  Okay, what about Nuntius?

A.  If you're using Nuntius, here's how to change your news server (thanks
    to Al Todak):

    Under Preferences, a user will find that they CAN'T change the
    newsgroup listed.  You can fix it this way: 

    - Close Nuntius
    - Go to the Preferences folder in the system folder
    - Find "Nuntius Prefs" and drag them to the trash
    - Restart Nuntius; a dialog box will appear asking for the name of the
      news server
    - Put:

         news.nwnexus.com

      ...in the box and you're on you're way!


Q.  What is the IP address for news.nwnexus.com?

A.  There's no need to use this IP address; what's more, using it's a bad
    idea, as we may be changing the address again in a short while.  Using
    the name only means you won't have to make changes when and if we
    change that address.  Stick with news.nwnexus.com and things will be
    better all around.
