___________________________________________________________________________ Newsgroups: Mailing postings in newsgroups to oneself regularly Q. How do I subscribe to a Usenet newsgroup so that the daily postings are e-mailed to me? A. Some groups have associated mailing lists; check the FAQ for the group for information on that. FAQs -- Frequently Asked Questions lists -- for many Usenet groups can be found on rtfm.mit.edu. Use FTP to connect, and log in as: anonymous ...and use your login name (for example, mickey) followed by an at-sign: mickey@ Move to the usenet-by-hierarchy directory, then walk down the directory tree looking for your newsgroup's FAQ. You can also use the tin newsreader to mail you postings from a group. This is an awfully handy way to keep abreast of the halcyon.announce newsgroup, the group that all users should read regularly, without having to use a newsreader or check in on a regular basis. Absolutely the best way to do this is to use a script that will resubmit itself each day and continually send you postings. David Ballenger (dlb@halcyon.com) has been kind enough to design and build just such a script, and together we've beat it up until we're sure it works 99% of the time. Thus, mailnews is a script that'll mail newsgroups reliably and without harming the system. Believe me, you *don't* want something to go wrong with this; the results can be horrible, and Ed's not a friendly guy when he's woken in the middle of the night when someone's news mailing script goes bad, as we've found out by sad experience... To use mailnews, just type: mailnews ...at the shell prompt, and answer the prompts. When you have the chance to provide the names of newsgroups that should be mailed, remember that these listings are in the same format as in your .newsrc file; you'd be well-advised to copy them directly out of there to avoid errors.
