______________________________________________________________________________ Newsgroups: Our news (NNTP) servers The news server for all users is: news.halcyon.com If you have a SLIP or PPP account, your newsreader should point at news.halcyon.com as the NNTP server. If you read your news on halcyon, your newsreader already does this for you. The exception to this rule is when you wish to read the Clarinet groups; in this case, you must set your NNTP host to news2.halcyon.com and send mail to support@halcyon.com, requesting access to that server (there is no additional fee, we simply need to add your login name to the list). If you see "You have no permission to read" when you try to read news with your newsreader, it's probably because you're using our old news server name, or you've mistyped the new name above. Another possibility is that your newsreader is attempting to use authentication, which our servers do not support; ensure that your newsreader is not sending your login name and password when it connects to the news server. Note that if you want to avoid any glitches in reading articles and you have an existing .newsrc file that you used with the old news server, you'll need to catch up all groups to avoid any confusion between the numbering systems on the old server versus the new. Indications that you haven't done this yet are getting fragments of articles or weird headers. In a few weeks, this problem will self-heal as articles expire. If you used to refer to this server by an IP, you now know why that's a bad idea -- we moved it to a different net, now that it's in full production. That's why you should always use names for servers and machines (except, of course, for name servers, where you don't have a lot of choice...) To change the news server address in WinVN: 1) Edit the winvn.ini file and edit the NNTPHost entry: NNTPHost=news.halcyon.com To change the news server in NewsWatcher (thanks to Bill Squires): 1) From the "File Menu", select "Preferences...". A "General Options" drop-down menu should be presented. 2) From the "General Options" drop-down menu, select "Server Addresses". A "Server Addresses" dialog box should be presented. 3) In the "Server Addresses" dialog box should be two text-entry boxes, one of which is labeled "News Server:" Enter "news.halcyon.com" (without the quotation marks, of course) in that box. (Don't be hasty and enter it in the "Mail Server:" box. It won't work.) In the "Mail Server" box, you should enter "smtp.halcyon.com") To change the news server in Nuntius (thanks to Al Todak): Under Preferences, a user will find that they CAN'T change the newsgroup listed. You can fix it this way: - Close Nuntius - Go to the Preferences folder in the system folder - Find "Nuntius Prefs" and drag them to the trash - Restart Nuntius; a dialog box will appear asking for the name of the news server - Put: news.halcyon.com ...in the box and you're on you're way. Happy lurking! (5-5-97/newons/WRD) ______________________________________________________________________________ Copyright 1997 Northwest Nexus Inc. All Rights Reserved.
