______________________________________________________________________________ UNIX: Changing your default editor Q. I don't like pico because it's too easy to use. Can I change to something confusing and difficult like vi? A. On 27 June 1994, we changed the default editor for most users from vi to pico. vi proved to be a bit much for the average new user, while pico's both fairly self-teaching and the default editor for the popular pine mail-reading program. If you didn't do anything to the .cshrc, .login, or .profile files that were provided when your account was created, then you're one of the folks whose startup files source the standard files in /usr/local/lib/std.* and you get pico as a default. You can change your default editor to anything you like. To make your default editor vi, for example, do this: 1. Edit your .login file and add this line at the end: setenv EDITOR vi 2. Log out and back in again, or type the following at the shell prompt: source .login If you're using another shell, you probably already know how to make any changes you want; if not, send mail to support@halcyon.com.
