______________________________________________________________________________ WWW: Advertising your Web pages Q. How can I make sure people looking for widgets will find my page, which advertises widgets, at the top of their search results? A. You can't. But you can improve your chances by registering your pages with some search engines. Registering Your Pages with Search Engines ------------------------------------------ There are many search engines and index services available on the Web. As of this writing, the most popular are: - Google - Yahoo - Alta Vista - Lycos - Webcrawler At each of these search engines, you can find a link to register the URL of your home page. The text usually says something like "Add/Remove URL" or "Register URL". Click on that link, and follow the instructions that follow. So far, none of these services charge to index your URL. You can also take a shotgun approach to registering your pages, by using the "Submit It!" service located at: This will allow you to select a set of search engines you wish to register with, and consolidate (somewhat) your registration efforts. Note that the way these services act on the information you give them varies. Some will accept the information as you provide it, while others will use the address to send a "web bot" to look at your pages, and index what they find there in a manner of their choosing. And the process often takes a week or two. So if your pages don't immediately show up in the search engines, don't panic; just check back a couple days later.
