This will work with analog modems (up to 28.8kbps) and ISDN devices (up to 128kpbs). This FAQ will focus on connecting an analog modem, but the setup for ISDN devices should similar with only a few minor exceptions. Configuring the Network Control Panel: -------------------------------------- Check to make sure that you have Remote Access Services (RAS) installed on your system by going to the "Control Panel" applet, from within the "Main" program group. Open the "Network" control panel and verify that "Remote Access Service" is listed under "Installed Network Software". If it is not listed, click on "Add Software" and select "Remote Access Service" from the drop-down menu. Once you have Remote Access Services installed, you will need to configure it for use with your modem or ISDN device. If you have just installed Remote Access Services, NT will automatically take you to the configuration dialog box. If Remote Access Services was preinstalled on your system, then you will need to select "Remote Access Service" from the "Installed Network Software" box. From there, select "Configure ...". This will take you to the Remote Access Setup screen. If your modem or ISDN device is not listed, you will need to select "Add ..." to add your modem to the list of available RAS devices. Select the proper port that your modem is connected to. Once you tell NT what port the modem is on, RAS will attempt to auto-detect what type of modem it is. If your modem is on the Hardware Compatibility List, RAS will probably detect it correctly. If not, you can manually specifically the brand and model of the modem. If you choose to "Configure ...", you will be prompted on how RAS will utilize the modem. If you are using the modem to allow others to dial-in to your computer, then you will want to select "Dial out and Recieve calls". Otherwise, you should have the Port Usage set to "Dial Out" only. Click "OK" when you are done configuring the port. Under the "Network ..." option, you should select only TCP/IP. NetBEUI and IPX/SPX should not have a check by them. You are now done with the Network Control Panel. Click "OK" to close and finish the software installation. You will need to reboot your machine for the changes to take effect. Configuring Remote Access ------------------------- When NT finishes rebooting, you should see a new program group in the Program Manager called "Remote Access Service". This is where you will access "Remote Access" for connecting to the Internet. First time users of Remote Access will get a warning message that the phone book is empty. To add an entry, click "OK" to go to the "Add Phonebook Entry" window. Before adding your entry, select the "Advanced >>" button to bring up the configuration window. For "Entry Name", enter: "Northwest Nexus". In the "Phone Number box", enter your local dial-in number. For the "Description" box, enter a description for this connection. "Authenticate using current user name and password" should not be selected if you are not using the exact same login and password as your Northwest Nexus account. Under the port settings, select the proper COM port that your modem is connected to. Click on "Modem" and set the proper modem speed and hardware settings. Please be care not to select the modem commands manually. Next, goto the "Network" settings. You should only have "PPP" and "TCP/IP" selected as the only network protocols used. "Request LCP extensions" should not be selected. Now goto "TCP/IP Settings. In the "PPP TCP/IP Settings" configuration dialog, select "Server assigned IP address" and "Use Specific Name Server addresses". Please make sure you have the following IP addresses entered: DNS: 198.137.231.1 DNS Backup: 206.63.63.1 WINS: 0.0.0.0 WINS Backup: 0.0.0.0 Both "Use VJ Header Compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" should be selected. Your TCP/IP configuration is now complete. Click "OK". Finally, click on the "Security" button and choose "Accept any authentication including clear text". Your RAS setup is complete and you are ready to dial. Making the Connection: ---------------------- Your now ready to dial the modem and make the connection. Simply return to "Remote Access", select the entry for the service you'd like to dial and select the "dial" button. You should be prompted for a login and password. Your modem will dial and your connection will be established. After the connection is made, Remote Access can be minimized. At this point, you may launch any of your favorite 32 bit winsock clients.
